The Advanced Institute for Ocean Research (AIOR) of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is a scientific research institution, dedicated to efficiently conducting organized scientific research, coordinating ocean-related resources, planning and undertaking major strategic tasks in the ocean field, and enhancing the university’s capability for innovation in ocean science and technology, scientific research support services and high-end talent training. AIOR aims to make important contributions to elevate SUSTech into a world-class institution in ocean discipline and an outstanding first-class university.
The AIOR/Shenzhen Ocean University Preparatory Office is leading the task of integrally establishing the Shenzhen Ocean University (SOU), the Deep Ocean Research Center, and the Ocean Museum. This initiative aims to cultivate urgently needed top-tier talents, promote Shenzhen’s “20+8” industrial clusters, and support the city’s vision to become a global leading ocean city.
SOU is located in the Dapeng New District of Shenzhen. The main campus began construction on July 20, 2023, with expected completion by 2026. The construction of the Deep Ocean Research Center and Ocean Museum is also progressing rapidly.
The AIOR/SOU focuses on the following six research directions: Ocean Electronics and Information, Ocean New Energy, Ocean New Materials, Ocean Engineering and Technology, Ocean Interdisciplinary Sciences, and Ocean Resources and Environment.
1. Ocean Electronics and Information: Including data science, communication technology, underwater robotics, artificial intelligence; research and development of communication technologies that use sound waves, lasers, electromagnetic waves and other transmission methods to enable cross-domain information transfer on the sea surface, underwater and seabed; also develop networking technologies for satellites, shore stations, base stations, adjacent spaces, and bottom-based systems.
2. Ocean New Energy: Including assessing, developing and utilizing marine renewable energy sources such as wind, hydrogen, solar, wave, and thermal gradient energy, to create a clean, low-carbon, and efficient energy system for ocean applications.
3. Ocean New Materials: Develops high-performance materials (resistant to corrosion, high pressure, high temperature, and other extreme conditions); develop ocean structural materials (including metals, concrete, and composite materials); also develop functional materials (nanotechnology, filtration, and electrolysis) with applications.
4. Ocean Engineering and Technology: Research includes advanced ocean equipment such as new offshore platforms, intelligent ocean fishing equipment, underwater vehicles, mobile floating platform and islands, high-performance boats, and ground-effect aircraft; intelligent coastal engineering, including artificial island construction, flexible pipelines, floating tunnels and other ocean engineering technologies.
5. Ocean Interdisciplinary Sciences: Cross-disciplinary research in physical oceanography, marine biology and biological oceanography, marine chemistry, marine geology and geophysics, and artificial intelligence, providing essential basic research support for ocean engineering and technology development.
6. Ocean Resources and Environment: Research on ocean carbon reduction, sustainable development and utilization of ocean resources (including biological resources, seabed resources, green energy resources etc.), ocean environmental conservation and restoration, and ocean pollution control and treatment.
The recruitment positions are divided into two tracks: the “Teaching and Research Track” and the “Research Track”
(1) The Teaching and Research Track includes chair professors (top leading scientists, academicians, etc.), professors, associate professors, and assistant professors, all on a tenure-track basis.
(2) The Research Track includes research professors, research associate professors, and research assistant professors.
Salary and benefits will be discussed on an individualized basis, including but not limited to:
i. Competitive Salary
Individually negotiated.
ii. Talent Projects
1. Prospective incentives include allowances ranging from CNY 240,000 to CNY 600,000 per year, with a reward period of 3 years, to be applied through the city of Shenzhen.
2. Rewards of up to CNY 1.8 million (over 5 years), to be applied through the Dapeng district (not mutually exclusive with Shenzhen city’s talent policy, but not applicable concurrently).
3. Additional talent rewards for national and Guangdong talent projects.
iii. Research Support Funds
Access to research funding from national to district levels. The Teaching and Research Track is accompanied by research support funds provided by the university based on individually negotiated.
iv. Research Space
